When Should You Use a Swivel?

If an apparatus is intended to stay fixed, adding a swivel may be the wrong choice. Avoid unmarked hardware and vague claims. If you cannot verify what the component is, what it is rated for, or how it should be used, it does not belong in an aerial rig.

Then consider compatibility. The connection points need to work correctly with the carabiners, shackles, straps, and apparatus attachment being used. Hardware that is technically strong enough can still be a poor choice if it creates cross-loading, side loading, crowding, sharp contact, or an awkward angle in the system.

Working load limit and minimum breaking strength are not interchangeable terms. A working load limit is the maximum load permitted during normal service under specified conditions. Minimum breaking strength refers to the force at which a product may fail under testing. Neither number should be treated as a complete rigging plan. Aerial systems must account for dynamic loading, safety factors, use conditions, and manufacturer guidance.

Material and finish matter, too. Smooth, well-finished hardware is easier to inspect and less likely to create unnecessary wear where it contacts other equipment. Premium gear should support long-term use, but no component is maintenance-free.

Correct Placement and Connection

In most rotating aerial configurations, the swivel is placed above the apparatus so the apparatus and lower connector can turn freely beneath it. It should hang in its intended direction, with no interference from nearby structure, slings, decorative elements, or other rigging hardware.

Give the system enough clearance. A spinning hoop needs space not only for the apparatus itself, but also for the performer’s body, extended limbs, and changing pathways during movement. A swivel cannot compensate for a low ceiling, a nearby wall, or a rig point positioned too close to an obstacle.

Connectors deserve equal attention. Locking carabiners should be correctly oriented and fully closed. The swivel’s attachment eye should not be forced against a gate, loaded across an unsuitable surface, or crowded by multiple pieces of hardware. Inspect Your Swivel Before Every Session

A quick pre-use check should become routine, whether you train in a commercial studio or a dedicated home space. Stop using the swivel if anything looks questionable. Four checks are especially useful:

  • Look for cracks, dents, sharp edges, corrosion, deformation, or unusual wear around the attachment eyes and body.
  • Rotate the swivel by hand without load and notice whether it moves smoothly or feels gritty, stiff, loose, or inconsistent.
  • Check that connected carabiners and shackles are locked, correctly oriented, and not rubbing against parts they should not contact.
  • Review the surrounding rigging, including slings, ropes, attachment points, and crash mat placement, rather than inspecting the swivel in isolation.
Keep a record of purchase dates, inspections, heavy use, impacts, and any unusual loading event. Retire equipment according to the manufacturer’s guidance, after a significant shock load, or whenever its condition is uncertain.
